The Climate Impacts Awards aim to make the health effects of climate change – both physical and mental – visible, driving urgent policy action. This scheme funds transdisciplinary teams to design and deliver short-term, high-impact research projects that combine robust evidence generation with targeted influencing and engagement strategies. The focus is on addressing evidence gaps and influencing policy outcomes in communities most affected by climate change.

Eligibility
  • Team Composition:
    • Must be transdisciplinary, combining expertise in health and climate (with additional disciplines like economics, political science, legal, or communications highly encouraged).
    • Teams must include a lead applicant (mid-career or established researcher) and between 1 to 7 coapplicants (total team size of 2–8 applicants).
    • Each applicant must be based at an eligible organisation (higher education institutions, research institutes, non-academic healthcare organisations, or not-for-profit/NGOs) that can agree to Wellcome’s grant conditions.
  • Key Criteria:
    • Demonstrated history of successful collaboration and project delivery
    • Strong expertise in climate and health research with a clear record of engagement with impacted communities and policy partners
    • Ability to dedicate at least 20% of research time to the project
    • Inclusion of coapplicants based in each country where the research will be conducted
How to Apply
  1. Prepare Your Proposal:
    • Develop a research proposal that clearly outlines how you will fill an evidence gap, articulate a theory of change for policy impact, and implement an engaged research approach with key stakeholders.
    • Ensure your proposal addresses the three key elements: evidence generation, a clear policy pathway, and comprehensive stakeholder engagement (including a communications strategy).
  2. Submission:
    • Applications must be submitted via Wellcome’s online grant system. Detailed instructions and guidance documents are available on the Wellcome website under the “How to apply” section.
  3. Required Documents:
    • Include relevant supporting documents, letters of support from policy partners or impacted communities, and evidence of your team’s transdisciplinary expertise.
Assessment Process/Matrix

Proposals are evaluated on several key criteria:

  • Relevance & Evidence Gap:
    • How well the project identifies and addresses a specific evidence gap related to the health impacts of climate change.
  • Policy Pathway & Impact:
    • Clarity of the proposed theory of change and the potential to influence urgent climate policy action at scale.
  • Transdisciplinary Approach:
    • Strength of collaboration across diverse fields and the integration of community and stakeholder insights.
  • Feasibility & Delivery:
    • Realism and robustness of the research design, including plans for effective communication and engagement strategies.
  • Team Capability:
    • The track record of the team, including leadership experience, commitment (minimum 20% research time per applicant), and support from their administering organisations.
